Gerard Salonga Relives Leonard Bernstein in “West Side Story”

September 29, 2008

In the ongoing “West Side Story” (WSS) at the Meralco Theater, it’s a known fact that staging a musical as big as this would need a world-class musical director to carry out the classic music of Leonard Bernstein. Berklee College of Music award-winning alumni Gerard Salonga fits rightfully in the production, which has been earning rave reviews in the past weeks.

“Bernstein is more famous as a conductor than a composer. I’ve known his works even before I went to Berklee. Among musical theater lovers, he’s been known for ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Candide,’ ‘On The Town’…,” says Gerard, whose childhood was spent listening to the music of the great conductor-composer.

Looking back, he said it’s as if he was being prepared for WSS. “I would not have been able to do this 10 years ago. Di ko makakayanan ‘yung stress.”

Dela Hoya vs. Pacquiao, A Pacman Nightmare or a Golden Boy Reality Check?

September 29, 2008

December 6 is well penciled in most fight fans’ calendar as the day marks a pound for pound match up than gives fans a reason to be excited about. Manny Pacquiao, touted as the sport of boxing’s pound for pound number one takes on Oscar Dela Hoya the most accomplished active boxer of this era. Tickets are already sold out, and the projected pay per view sales are through the roof. Fights fans are already counting the days.

But while some experts and many Pacquiao followers dismiss the Golden boy as a threat to Pacquiao’s dominance of the sport, a nightmare of a loss is starting to look real. I must admit as anstudent of the sport and as a fan, I am torn between this match up as I am a Pacquiao fan and an even bigger Oscar follower. Oscar has been inactive in recent years and Pacquiao is moving up to his heaviest weight yet, these factors makes the match up interesting rather than a mismatch in favour of the Golden boy as some say.

As usual, there are speculations about her and Ryan Agoncillo’s wedding. Is it sure that it will be next year? “Yun ang plano, but there’s still no definite date kasi nga pareho kaming so busy and we have no time to sit down to plan all the details.

Jolina’s movie ITALY is a flop

September 29, 2008

Italy’s beautiful locations alone do not make a good movie. This was already proven by GMA Films in “Batanes.” The stunning vistas of the windswept islands up north are not enough to compensate for the shortcomings of the badly written script. This was also proven by Star Cinema’s “For the First Time,” that was even filmed in Greece but also suffered from a botched up screenplay. (In contrast, their “Very Special Love” didn’t even have to go somewhere far but proved to be so attractive to viewers who found it’s overly cute story irresistible.)

GMA Films now proves once again that foreign locations are not enough to attract moviegoers in “I.T.A.L.Y. (I Trust And Love You),” supposedly a tribute at that to OFWs. Again, the film’s chief drawback is its script by Sennedy Que.

Angelica Panganiban goes Bananas

September 29, 2008

Angelica Panganiban did not think twice about accepting the gag show “Banana Split” even if she still is working on her current teleserye, “Iisa Pa Lamang.” All her life as an actress, she has been doing drama. It was time to prove that she can be part of a gag program, she says.

“’Banana Split’ is actually more of a gag show than a comedy show. Mas mahirap gawin. But I love the challenge. And the program allows me to win new friends, who are mostly my age,” she said.

Her co-stars in “Banana Split” are Roxanne Guinoo, Valerie Concepcion, Cristine Reyes, Princess Ryan and Dianne Medina.
