Kris Aquino defends Ai Ai de las Alas over best actress win

December 27, 2010

Queen of All Media Kris Aquino defended her show business friend Ai Ai delas Alas after the latter won the Metro Manila Film Festival’s Best Actress trophy for her film “Ang Tanging Ina Mo, Last Na ‘To.”

During the event, several people questioned delas Alas’s victory. Joan Cabaldo-Bañaga, line producer of Cinemabuhay and Studio 5′s “Rosario”, said she was surprised that Jennylyn Mercado was not nominated for the best actress category.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Kris said delas Alas gave her best in the film and really deserved to win.

She noted that like Mercado, she was also not nominated. (Kris is starring in the horror movie “Dalaw.”)

“I didn’t get a single nomination so I have no reaction about that, hindi ba? Good sports kami (ni Ai Ai). Kasi as I’ve always said ang pinaka-importante ang pagbayad ng tao ng pinaghirapan nilang pera sa takilya, hindi ba? So for me that is award enough. So I would like to thank everybody. Consistent kami, on Day 2 pang number 3 kami. So thank you,” she said.

She said that she’s happy and proud of delas Alas.

“Super happy for her. Sabi ko sa kanya, Ano ka ba hindi ka drama. Tapos sabi niya, ‘Ako ang mananalo, friendship.’ So tama. So congrats, friendship! I’m so proud of you,” Aquino said.

Aquino said she is super happy that her movie did not bomb at the box office.

“Kung hindi ako kumikita, didibdibin ko ito ng husto pero dahil kumikita ang pelikula ay super happy ako,” she said.

In a separate interview, Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., said that people just have to accept the jurors’ decision.

“We have to respect the decision of the jurors and sa tingin ko naman deserving lahat ang nanalo,” Revilla said.

Surprise winners at MMFF awards night

December 27, 2010

AI AI de las Alas’ wish was granted.

She won as best actress in the Metro filmfest awards night for “Tanging Ina Mo, Last Na ‘To” where she played the role of the country’s former president who copes with family problems and battling the big C.

And not only that, the movie also won several other trophies: best picture, best director for Wenn Deramas, best story and screenplay for Mel Mendoza del Rosario, best supporting actress for Eugene Domingo, best child actress for Xyriel Manabat, best musical score for Jesse Lasaten, and most gender sensitive film.

The film predicted to win the most awards, “Rosario”, won only as second best picture.

Ironically, the Cinema Evaluation Board that rates the quality of films it screens, gave “Rosario” an A rating and didn’t find anything in “Tanging Ina” worth rating about.

The night’s biggest winner is really Dolphy, who won two acting awards, best supporting actor as the grandson of “Rosario” who acts as the film’s narrator and as the title-roler in “Fr. Jejemon.” This is a vindication for the ailing King of Comedy who was earlier lambasted by some quarters for making fun of the Holy Communion in “Fr. Jejemon.” “Rosario” also won other awards: best float, best production design for Joey Luna and Miki Hahn, best cinematography for Carlo Mendoza, best editing for John Wong, best dressed stars for Jennylyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo, and Gatpuno Cultural Award.

The animated film, “RPG: Metanoia,” also won several awards: best third picture, special gender sensitive film, best sound (tie with “Super Inday and the Golden Bibe”), and best theme song for “Kaya Ko.”

The fantasy action-comedy “Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote” won awards for best make up, best visual effects for Rico Gutierrez, and Face of the Night special awards for Bong Revilla and Sam Pinto.

In the special indie category, winner of best indie film is Adolfo Alix Jr’s “Presa.”

Bea Alonzo, Zanjoe Marudo christmas dates

December 27, 2010

BEA Alonzo and Zanjoe Marudo have been sighted together on several occasions.

During the holidays, the two were seen at Rockwell and obviously, they were twosome coosome.

Bea, to recall, had been involved in a love triangle with Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson. It had been reported that some fans theatened her with harm.

Before Kim and Gerald’s movie, “Till My Heartaches End” was shown, the problem had been reportedly resolved. To some, it meant that Gerald has parted ways with Bea. Whether Gerald has reconciled with Kim isn’t clear, but reports have it that they have talked about it, and whatever happens, they said, their special relationship remains.

On the other hand, Bea has been so silent about the issue, which was the best thing to do.

Meanwhile, Zanjoe has moved on after his breakup with Mariel Rodriguez who had a whirlwind romance with action superstar, Robin Padilla which led to a hush-hush wedding in India.

Zanjoe was linked for a while with Cristine Reyes, but it was revealed that Rayver Cruz owns the sexy actress’ heart.

So, now that both Bea and Zanjoe appear unattached, sightings of them together come as a surprise, but on the other hand, a welcome one. While they don’t hide the special relationship, Bea and Zanjoe are still not talking about it. But isn’t it that action speaks louder than words?

PNoy urged to tap PCGG to probe GMA

December 13, 2010

President Benigno Aquino III’s legal adviser has urged him to look into his late mother’s first executive order (EO) to address perceived defects in his first EO.

Retired Justice Magdangal Elma, presidential adviser for special concerns, is recommending the transfer of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) from the Department of Justice to the Office of the President.

She wants Aquino to direct the PCGG to investigate cases of graft and corruption under the Arroyo administration.

“The PCGG has more extensive powers to investigate, file and/or prosecute graft and corruption cases under EO No. 1, series of 1986, than the Philippine Truth Commission under EO 1, series of 2010, and that the PCGG’s powers had been recognized and/or settled in a number of cases decided by the Supreme Court,” she said.

Elma cited Section 2(b) of then-President Corazon Aquino’s EO 1, series of 1986, that allows the chief executive to assign cases of graft of corruption to the PCGG for investigation “from time to time,” aside from its task of recovering all ill-gotten wealth of the Marcoses.

She added that the said EO is a law, having been issued by Aquino when she was still exercising legislative powers under the provisional or “freedom constitution.”

Elma pointed out the EO has not been repealed, and that funds are appropriated for the agency annually.

She cited a Supreme Court decision in Cojuangco, Jr vs PCGG et al, GR 92319-20, October 20, 1990, that states:

“Upon the creation of the PCGG under Executive Order No. 1 issued by President Aquino, the PCGG was charged with the task of assisting the President not only in the recovery of ill-gotten wealth or unexplained wealth accumulated by the former President, his immediate family, relatives, subordinates and close associates but also in the investigation of such cases of graft and corruption as the President may assign to the Commission from time to time and o prevent a repetition of the same in the future.”

Elma served as PCGG chairperson under the Estrada administration.

Vizconde, Webb families await Supreme Court ruling

December 13, 2010

Fifteen years and 6 months.

The mother of Hubert Webb, Elizabeth, clearly remembers how long her son has been in jail after he was convicted by a lower court for his supposed participation in the Vizconde massacre.

The Webb family hopes that the Supreme Court will finally release its verdict on the case and free Hubert in its last en banc session for the year 2010 on Tuesday.

“Alam namin walang kasalanan si Hubert. Every day, kalbaryo ito ng pamilya,” Elizabeth said.

The Webb family said they are ready for any decision the court makes, but Elizabeth prays that star witness Jessica Alfaro will finally say that Hubert had nothing to do with the crime.

“Ina rin siya, baka mangyari sa kanya in the future, malaman niya kung gaano kasakit ang maging biktima ng kasinungalingan,” Elizabeth said.

Lauro Vizconde, meanwhile, also wants an end to the case.

For him, true justice is seeing Hubert remain behind bars.

“I’ll respect their [Supreme Court] decision but of course I’ll criticize it [if Hubert is freed]. Iyong evidence ang basis, siyempre guilty,” he said.

His wife, Estrelita, and their children Carmela and Jennifer were killed in the massacre that occurred on June 30, 1991 at their house in BF Homes, Paranaque. Carmela was raped before she was killed.

Lauro was in the United States at the time of the murders.

Hubert Webb, Peter Estrada, Hospicio Fernandez, Michael Gatchalian, Antonio Lejano II, and Miguel Rodriguez were sentenced to life imprisonment for the massacre.

Two of the accused, Joey Filart and Artemio Ventura, have remained fugitives.

If the high court upholds Webb’s conviction, he can still file a motion for reconsideration.

If he is acquitted or the high tribunal reverses a lower court’s ruling on the case, Webb will be freed.

Prosecutors will not be able to file a motion for reconsideration if he is acquitted, based on the legal doctrine that prevents double jeopardy.

Both the Webb and Vizconde families hope they will finally receive justice before Christmas.

‘Sarah Geronimo was only joking’

December 13, 2010

Pop Star Princess Sarah Geronimo’s personal assistant and friend has come to her defense via microblogging site Twitter.

This is in connection with Cristine Reyes’s angry tweets, which many believe are aimed at the singer-actress.

According to Anna Dasig, Reyes shouldn’t have given meaning to Geronimo’s purported statement about how a man is always being chased by a sexy woman if he is a good dancer.

Based on the sultry actress’s tweets, it was that remark that caught her ire.

“@PilyangSweet nagbibiruan lang sila ni john pratts kanina..ewan ko kung bakit kailangan mong mag react ng over ng ganito? Relax ka lang! Alamin mo muna kung ano ang puno’t-dulo bago ka magreact ng ganyan,” she tweeted.

Showbiz insiders said Geronimo purportedly made the remark during the dress rehearsals for musical variety show “ASAP XV.”

The show’s mainstays – Prats, Gab Valenciano, and Rayver Cruz – were reportedly rehearsing a dance number.

Cruz was both linked to Reyes and Geronimo, lead star of the now defunct television series “Idol.”

Prats also said he sees nothing wrong with Geronimo’s remark. He hopes that the 2 can patch things up especially now that Christmas is near.

ABS-CBN News tried to get a statement from Star Magic, talent management of Cruz, but it declined to comment on the issue.

Cristine maintains stance

Reyes, on the other hand, refused to accept Dasig’s explanation.

“At @Annadasig yung alaga mo pagsabihan mo wag ako! nananahimik ako,” she tweeted. “@annadasig wag siya kamo MAGBIRO ng Ganun Kung alam niya may pinaparinggan siya!”

She added: “@annadasig at kapag magpaparinig man o magbibiro make sure its true! kasi alam mo naman na siya ang halos mamatay na sa kakahahol. Diba?”

This is not the first time that Reyes was involved in a quarrel with a fellow celebrity.

She had also engaged Pauleen Luna in a Twitter war of words.

ABS-CBN wants judge to inhibit in Willie Revillame case

December 13, 2010

The camp of ABS-CBN on Monday filed an urgent motion with the Regional Trial Court in Quezon City seeking an early resolution of its previous pleas for Judge Luisito Cortez to inhibit himself from hearing the legal dispute between the network and Willie Revillame.

The legal battle began when the actor moved to ABC TV5 and sued ABS-CBN for judicial confirmation of rescission of his talent contract.

In its petition, the Kapamilya network noted the “numerous conflicting orders and resolutions” handed down by Judge Cortez.

It also cited an “undisclosed relationship” between the spouse of Cortez, lawyer Angelita Ortega Cortez, and ABC 5 president Ray Espinosa.

Ms Cortez and Espinosa worked in the same law firm in the past.

The lawyers argued that this “hidden fact” that had been recently discovered gives rise to a conflict of interest situation for Judge Cortez.

“Espinosa’s relationship with the spouse of [Judge Cortez] gives rise to the question of whether such relationship was taken advantage of [in the case] given the manner [Judge Cortez] handled the case to favor plaintiff Revillame and prejudice ABS-CBN,” the motion stated.

Judge Cortez previously declined to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) sought by ABS-CBN against the actor performing work for ABC TV5. He required Revillame to post a P426-million bond to answer for the damages being claimed by his former station for breach of his talent contract.

ABS-CBN previously complained that after the denial of the TRO, Judge Cortez “shut down his court to defendant ABS-CBN’s urgent application of injunctive relief, giving Espinosa, ABC and plaintiff Revillame a sigh of relief.”

ABS-CBN also charged Judge Cortez with bias and partiality for approving the P426-million bond posted by Revillame, which purportedly contained the actor’s “forged signature.”

In support of the charge, a side-by-side comparison of the actor’s signatures was presented in court to show the signature of Revillame on the bond “does not even remotely look like” his other signatures in documents previously submitted to the court.

The network said that the submission of the bond with a forged signature is “perjury” and “falsification of commercial document.”

If the forgery is proven, Revillame can face criminal charges involving penalties of up to 12 years of imprisonment.

This is in addition to the other lawsuits the actor is already facing since he moved to a different station bringing “Wowowee” with him.
