CBCP seeks Vatican clarification on condom use

November 22, 2010

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is appealing to the public to refrain from judging the statement made by Pope Benedict XVI on the use of condoms.

The Pope had said the use condoms is justified if used as protection against HIV-AIDS.

This is the first time the Catholic church has recognized the use of contraceptives to prevent the spread of AIDS, but it still believes it should not be used as a contraceptive.

Bishop Deogracias Iniguez, CBCP head of public affairs, said on Monday that they will seek a clarification from the Vatican in connection to what the Pope said.

“Parang nagkaroon kasi ng twist sa lumabas sa balita, dapat tingnan kung ano yun context at yun buong statement,” Iniguez said.

He added that once they get a confirmation in connection with what the Pope said, the CBCP will come out with a pastoral statement which would include guidance on the teachings and laws of the Church on the use of condoms as protection and not as a contraceptive.

On the other hand, groups in favor of the passage of the reproductive health bill in Congress said the CBCP is just trying to save face.

They said Philippine bishops did not expect that the Pope would change his mind about the use of contraceptives as protection

Mariel Rodriguez ready to reconcile with Toni Gonzaga

November 22, 2010

Philippines- Actress-television host Mariel Rodriguez is not closing her door to a possible reconciliation with Toni Gonzaga.

Rodriguez said she was glad to hear that Gonzaga would also want to see an end to their misunderstanding.

“That’s good, lahat naman yata iyon ang gusto,” she said.

She also wished to patch things up with Gonzaga, who she claims is a good friend.

When asked if she’s ready to face Gonzaga as well as KC Concepcion, she replied: “Wala namang problema sa akin.”

It was last September when Gonzaga admitted that she and Rodriguez were not on good terms after finding out that the latter had purportedly been badmouthing her. Rodriguez was also rumored to be belittling Concepcion’s hosting ability.

Rodriguez has denied the allegations and decided to keep silent about the controversies.

Rodriguez just flew home from India where she and husband Robin Padilla had a two-month movie shoot-honeymoon.

The newlywed couple shared that they were both heavily involved in the production of their first film together.

“Nag-shoot talaga kami sa India to make the movie beautiful,” said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, meantime, disputed rumors that she is already pregnant.

“Hindi ako buntis, ayaw muna naming magbaby. Siyempre, we want to enjoy each other first,” she said.

Sid Lucero arrives in US for Int’l Emmy Awards

November 22, 2010

“I just want to shake everybody’s hands. I wanna see Helena Bonham Carter, I wanna see Bob Hoskins, I wanna see the rest, I wanna see everyone who has made it. It’s like an inspiration to all the actors, I grew up watching them, so di ba, to see them live in person that’s a big thing. That’s all I’m looking forward to,” ani Lucero.

“To tell you the truth, I’m not here as Timmy Eigenman, I’m not here as Sid Lucero, I’m here as a Filipino. I’m here carrying our flag, I’m here carrying it as high as possible, as proud as can be,” dagdag ni Lucero.

“We have a chance to make a dent in this industry worldwide, given the limitations that we have di ba? Ano pa kay kung mabigyan tayo ng malaking budget or mas maraming oras, ano pa kaya, nandito tayo man!” dagdag ni Lucero.

Tumanggap naman ng gintong medalya si Lucero bilang nominado sa Best Actor category na iniaalay naman niya sa lahat ng kanyang fans.

“Para sa inyo naman talaga ang ginagawa naming trabaho eh, so siguro ito ang pinakamalaking ‘Thank You’ na naibigay ng buong Pilipinas sa akin. This means that I’m doing my job well enough for the world to realize that we do, as in the Philippines, our industry has what it takes given its limitations,” masayang pahayag ng aktor.

It’s time for Mayweather to put up or shut up: Freddie Roach

November 22, 2010

Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach issued a challenge to Floyd Mayweather on Saturday, saying the time had come for the undefeated American to decide if he would face the Filipino in the ring.

Boxing fans have long savoured the prospect of a Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown, if only to decide the mythical title of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter.

“He (Mayweather) has got to do something,” Roach told reporters after Filipino Pacquiao won an eighth world title in an unprecedented eighth weight class by beating Mexico’s Antonio Margarito.

“After this great performance by Manny, Mayweather just has to put up or shut up now and move out of the country.

“Let’s face it. Manny’s way above him at this point because I remember when he (Mayweather) was ducking Margarito and he wouldn’t fight him either. If he doesn’t fight Manny now, we know this guy should retire.”

Mayweather had been expected to meet Pacquiao earlier this year until negotiations collapsed over the American’s demand for random drug testing.

American Shane Mosley then stepped in to take the Filipino’s place but he was outclassed by Mayweather in a non-title welterweight bout in Las Vegas in May.

That left Mayweather with an unblemished career record of 41-0 with 25 knockouts but even then he was reluctant to commit to a mega-fight with Pacquiao.

“I’m not going out chasing fighters,” said Mayweather, who surrendered his tag as the best pound-for-pound boxer to the Filipino during a 21-month retirement from the sport that ended late last year.

Blood test

“If Manny takes the (blood) test, we can make the fight happen. If he doesn’t, we don’t have a fight. If Manny Pacquaio wants to fight, it is not hard to find me.”

Pacquiao deferred any talk of a Mayweather fight to the promoters after improving his own career record to 52-3-2 with 38 knockouts after his unanimous points victory over Margarito at Cowboys Stadium.

“I’m not going to fight anybody as long as there is a problem with the decision of the promoter,” the 31-year-old Filipino said. “That’s my promoter’s job. I’m just a fighter to do my job and train hard for the fight.”

Whichever opponents are lined up going forward, Pacquiao has indicated he will fight twice more before retiring from boxing to focus on his burgeoning career in politics.

“I am really happy for what I’ve done in boxing, and I don’t want to get too overwhelmed right now because you have to balance responsibility,” he said after claiming the vacant WBC super welterweight title.

“That’s why I enter (the ring), because I want to help people by making good fights.”

Pacquiao’s fight on Saturday (Sunday in the Philippines) was certainly a good one, and the most destructive performance by the Filipino Roach had ever witnessed.

“It’s the worst beating I have ever seen (by Pacquiao), accumulation-wise and the number of punches landed,” he said. “Margarito is a very resilient guy, a tough guy and he has no quit in him.

“His corner should have saved him. He took too much unnecessary punishment to me. I would have stopped that fight. After eight rounds, it was over and it was just a matter of time.”

Charice leads tree lighting ceremony in US

November 22, 2010

Fans braved the rain to watch international singing sensation Charice kick off the Holiday shopping season at The Citadel outlet mall just outside of Los Angeles last Saturday.

Charice joined teen pop star Cody Simpson as they lit the Christmas tree and launched this year’s toys for tots program.

“Pareho kaming busy. We still have time to help other people by sharing our music by singing for them, and by calling the people to help them. Talagang gusto ko ganoon,” she said.

That music is expected to rack up awards as well. Last week, producer and Charice’s mentor, David Foster, predicted that she would eventually win a Grammy award.

When asked to react, she said: “Pressure. I mean I’m waiting for that, that’s like one of my dreams. So, kung mangyari ‘yon, siyempre sobra, one of the best moments talaga sa life ko.”

While Foster builds her up for Grammy stardom, he’s also trying to protect her young image.

Last week, Gin Blossoms front man Robin Wilson called Charice extremely hot and that he can’t wait to see her in Maxim magazine. When reporters at a “David Foster and Friends” show tried to ask if Charice would do a Maxim, Foster ended the press conference.

“Hindi ko alam kung serious sila sa sinabi nila, pero kung serious sila salamat, Kung insulto ‘yong ginagawa nila, it’s fine for me. But I think ang cute naman ni Sir David. It’s cute because I think he doesn’t want any people to say that kind of words to me,” Charice said.

For now, Charice remains busy. This was one of her scheduled 3 tree lighting ceremonies.

She also performed at the Grove in Los Angeles on Sunday, and will do another one at the Rockefeller in New York next week.

As of now, she’s not scheduled to appear at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, and she looks forward to a quiet thanksgiving this year.

Fans are speculating that Charice may appear on hit American TV series “Glee” on November 30 after pictures of cast members linked to Charice’s character, Sunshine Corazon, surfaced.

However, Charice said she herself has not filmed her scenes and is unsure of when her next appearance will be.
