FightFan.com caught up with Freddie Roach to get the latest on Manny Pacquiao before his June 28 fight against David Diaz. Only on FightFan.com!
FF: As Manny looks to fight at lightweight for the first time has the difference in dieting and nutrition in this camp been beneficial as you enter the final stages of training?
FR: Yes he’s able to eat a little more so he’s not starving himself as much as was the case when we were looking to make 130 pounds. And it’s definitely translated to Manny having more energy.

Manny Pacquiao’s Heavy Pick
June 16, 2008
LESS than two weeks before his title fight with American David Diaz, Manny Pacquiao l remains the overwhelming favorite to wrest the World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight crown.
In the latest betting odds released for the June 28 bout (June 29 in Manila) dubbed ‘Lethal Combination’ set at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Filipino ring icon is listed as a -450 favorite to win a fourth world championship in four different weight classes.
If translated, the number means a $450 bet on the 29-year-old fighter now considered the best in the world, pound for pound, would only earn a measly $100.
In contrast, Diaz is a +360 favorite, meaning a $100 bet on the reigning champion will earn the bettor $360.

IT WILL be raining punches in Las Vegas when champion “Dangerous” David Diaz and challenger Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao lock mitts on June 29 (Manila time) for the World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight title.
At least that’s how ring experts and the combatants themselves see the fight turning out.
“Two world champions, at the top of their game, matching each other in speed, power, stamina and courage is a recipe for a great fight,” said promoter Bob Arum.
“Manny has never felt the power thrown at this weight class just as Diaz has never gone toe-to-toe with such a human dynamo.

Manny Pacquiao will KO David Diaz in the 9th round - Freddie Roach
June 9, 2008
Freddie Roach doesn’t expect Manny Pacquiao to knock out David Diaz in the early rounds when the two meet for the American’s World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight crown on June 29.
“I don’t see the fight being over early,” said Roach yesterday from Los Angeles where he has been training Pacquiao.
“David’s a durable guy so I don’t think the fight’s going to end in the early rounds,” said the 48-year-old trainer.
Still, Roach is confident Pacquiao is going to emerge triumphant and that he should get the job done “later in the fight.”
“We’ll get to him by the ninth round, I think.”
Roach said he is happy with the way Pacquiao’s training has progressed even in the short time they have spent together.

Manny Pacquiao Report

HOLLYWOOD-Only a few people were present as Manny Pacquiao arrived at the Wild Card Boxing gym on Tuesday, including a few of the fighters the Filipino superstar would be sparring.
Standing behind the welcoming counter was Freddie Roach, holding court before the arrival of his charge.
Suddenly, the parking lot below the back stairs of the famous boxing club was gaining activity as several cars arrived.
A few minutes later Pacquiao walked through the doors holding a professional camera and jokingly asking Roach, “Hey, I’d like to take pictures of Manny.”

Freddie Roach: “I’ve never seen Pacquiao this Focused”
February 29, 2008
Freddie Roach has no delusions about the task he and pupil Manny Pacquiao have in front of them on March 15. “We have our work cut out for ourselves,” Roach tells BoxingScene.com of the rematch with Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez. “I think he’s a great fighter and has a very good trainer.” Nonetheless, he has been impressed with Pacquiao’s efforts in camp thus far.
“One thing about this fight, I’ve never seen Manny as focused for a fight as this one. He’s really bitten down. I have to be careful about over-training him. We’re averaging 30-35 rounds per day, he’s just a machine. He wanted to go more rounds but I held him back of course. I expect in this fight to see the best Pacquiao yet.”
Pundits and fans alike are split on who to favor in the rematch of their May 2004 clash which produced a polarizing even verdict. One judge had it going away for Pacquiao, while one had it a one-sided rout for Marquez. The third judge scored it a 113-113 draw. Freddie Roach believes that the difference lies more so in Pacquiao’s changes rather than Marquez’s. “I think he’s a 90 percent better fighter,” Roach remarked. “He’s smarter, more experienced, he sets things up, he has two hands now. I think he’s a much better fighter than the first time they fought.”
