Apply no conversion rule on Arroyo farms
April 19, 2008
The Arroyo clan of First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo was accused of being among the biggest violators of the government’s land distribution program and Negros Occidental farmers are now challenging President Arroyo to apply the ban on the conversion of prime agricultural lands on the Arroyo haciendas.
Farmers of the Arroyo haciendas arrived at the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) office the other day to petition the government to stop the Arroyos from converting the 157-hectare Hacienda Bacan in Barangay Guintubhan in Isabela, Negros Occidental.
The Arroyos formed a company, Rivulet Agro Industrial Corp., to assume ownership of Hacienda Bacan. Rivulet Agro subsequently applied for the conversion of the hacienda into an agro-industrial estate.
Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo, the President’s brother-in-law, is spearheading the land conversion of Hacienda Bacan. Iggy Arroyo is one of the officers of Rivulet Agro.

Palace orders Spratlys deal cut short
March 10, 2008
The controversial Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking (JMSU) agreement that the government signed with China and Vietnam for a survey of the oil-rich area off Palawan including the Spratly islands was ordered cut short by President Arroyo on the heels of allegations that the agreement was treasonous.
Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Sergio Apostol said a review is being undertaken on the current phase of the JMSU but the second phase has been abandoned because of the “political noise” the agreement had generated.
The review, which was requested by the Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC), aims to determine whether there is a need to extend the agree-ment, since it will lapse on June 30.

More bad news for Malacañang, its occupants and Palace aides.
A recent Pulse Asia survey found 69 percent of respondents in Metro Manila supporting the protest actions calling for the resignation of government officials linked to the scandal-tainted ZTE-National Broadband Network (NBN) contract, even as only 16 percent have expressed willingness to join such protest actions.
At the same time, the Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released yesterday its results on the trust rating of the presidential spouse, Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, who, in the last quarter survey of 2007, obtained a shameful trust rating of —51 percent, the lowest ever obtained by him in all the years with Mrs. Arroyo being in Malacañang.

March 2, 2008
BY ELLEN TORDESILLAS
ZTE star witness Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr. yesterday called on upright members of the Armed Forces and Philippine National Police to make a stand on the issue of corruption hounding the Arroyo administration.
In an interview at La Salle Greenhills, Lozada said the opposition should abandon its call for President Arroyo to resign. “She has to be ousted.”
Lozada said given the arrogance of Arroyo and her officials, “people must really be prepared to bring this political crisis to a boil.” He added that people should stop deluding themselves that she will resign.

GMA must go!
THE University of the Philippines Council declared this yesterday, adapting two separate resolutions seeking the resignation of President Arroyo and Romulo Neri as chairman of Commission on Higher Education at the same time.
In a statement, the group enumerated Arroyo’s acts which it felt are “a direct assault on nearly all the values we hold sacred in the academe,” adding that she apparently has lost the moral ascendancy to continue in office.
Among the acts mentioned included the infamous “Hello, Garci” scandal, the unprecedented number of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances, her stonewalling or order a “sham” investigation renders government institutions created under the Constitution or the law to safeguard accountability ineffective.
The group also scored the Arroyo administration’s invocation of executive privilege in responding to the Senate investigation on the $329-million National Broadband Network deal with China’s ZTE Inc.

Gina de Venecia slams Mikey Arroyo

A slam for a slam.
Ousted Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.’s spouse, Gina, yesterday slammed presidential son, Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo, who had earlier slammed his godmother, Gina, telling her to “shut up” and desist from issuing harsh statements against his mother, President Arroyo.
But Mrs. De Venecia, who has apparently returned the candle, a common Filipino saying means a total break with the other party, yesterday issued a statement on the “shut up” call of Mikey, saying: “In true Arroyo fashion, as if to echo his father’s (FG Mike Arroyo) call
for my stepson, Joey to “back off!” Mikey just told his Ninang Gina de Venecia to ‘shut up’ in yet another display of arrogance by the presidential son. Read more>>

Anti-GMA forces stage rallies today
February 24, 2008
CIVIL society, opposition, militant, worker, student and other sectoral groups, led by former President Corazon Aquino, are offering a thanksgiving Mass today at the Baclaran church to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the Edsa “people power” 1 that ousted the Marcos regime.
Militant groups, who are calling for President Arroyo’s ouster, are also set to stage protest actions in at least 15 cities for the Edsa 1 anniversary.
The thanksgiving Mass, which will be held at 3 p.m., was originally set to be held in Makati City then moved to Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City and finally to the Shrine of our Mother of Perpetual Help in Baclaran, Parañaque.
Sto. Domingo Church declined to host the Mass because Malacañang also sought to “reserve” the place for a Mass on the same day, said Joey Salgado, chief of the Makati public information office.
“Instead of being the site of two Masses, they decided not to allow any Mass there, said Rodolfo Noel “Jun” Lozada, the Senate’s key witness in alleged anomalies in the government’s national broadband project. “It’s sad but this is the reality.”
Makati Mayor and United Opposition president Jejomar Binay said the venue “is not important.”
