Gerard Salonga Relives Leonard Bernstein in “West Side Story”
September 29, 2008
In the ongoing “West Side Story” (WSS) at the Meralco Theater, it’s a known fact that staging a musical as big as this would need a world-class musical director to carry out the classic music of Leonard Bernstein. Berklee College of Music award-winning alumni Gerard Salonga fits rightfully in the production, which has been earning rave reviews in the past weeks.
“Bernstein is more famous as a conductor than a composer. I’ve known his works even before I went to Berklee. Among musical theater lovers, he’s been known for ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Candide,’ ‘On The Town’…,” says Gerard, whose childhood was spent listening to the music of the great conductor-composer.
Looking back, he said it’s as if he was being prepared for WSS. “I would not have been able to do this 10 years ago. Di ko makakayanan ‘yung stress.”

To break in to the band scene is already like looking for a needle in a haystack. Lucky if they pass that phase but the next steps would prove to be a challenge—keeping the momentum, establishing credibility and longevity.
Only a few bands experience such kind of popularity yet still gaining the respect of both critics and colleagues at the same, continue to bring good music to the audiences. Itchyworms is one band that fits to the description.
Starting off as an independent band in 1996, this band has come a long way to being a signed artist and one of the most respected in the industry today. Formed by Ateneo college orgmates Jazz Nicolas (drums/ vocals), Kelvin Yu (bass/ vocals) and Jugs Jugueta, this former trio added Chino Singson to fill the second guitar position in 1997.
