Hanjin’s bribe offer bared; Gloria scolded Mayor

May 2, 2008

Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Corp., the South Korean firm embroiled in the controversial construction of condominium units in the forest reserve area in Subic, is in for more serious problems as the company earned the ire of Senate probers again, this time stemming from a reported bribe offer to a local official in Mindanao.

Reports said the Korean firm allegedly offered a P400-million contract to a municipal mayor in Misamis Oriental in exchange for a reversal of his order stopping the construction of a $2-billion shipyard which had not secured the necessary permits.

This came after Senate investigators, led by Sen. Pia Cayetano, Thursday said Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) officials were found to have allegedly committed grave violations in allowing Hanjin to construct two high-rise condominium buildings within its forest reserve area and the firm would likely be facing numerous serious charges.

April 18, 2008

In an apparent bid to convince soldiers not to break the chain of command and continue to support the government amid increasing prices of basic commodities and “destabilization” efforts led by fugitive Marine Capt. Nicanor Faeldon against the Arroyo administration, President Arroyo yesterday said access to cheaper rice would be available to soldiers and their families to ensure that they would be able to afford the staple.

In her speech during the Fellowship Meeting of the Association of Generals and Flag Officers at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, she said they are enlisting the Armed Forces to be an outlet for distributing cheaper rice to the ordinary soldiers and their families who are “after all among the less privileged in our society.”

The President also thanked retired and active generals and flag officers for their continued support to the rule of law and the Constitution.

EU to AFP: Stop ‘order of battle’ vs militants

April 4, 2008

The European Union (EU) talked tough yesterday as it called on the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to stop its “order of battle” approach against communist insurgents and to exclude from the military’s so-called hit list individuals or civil society groups identified with leftist movements.

In a 60-page Philippines Needs Assessment Mission (NAM) report released by the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines to reporters in Manila yesterday, the EU said it believes that the military’s counter-insurgency strategy is linked to the extra-judicial killings and forced disappearances of leftist leaders and other militants suspected by the military of being “enemies of the state.”

Graft a sin, but spare Gloria from ouster says bishops

March 14, 2008

Metro Manila Catholic bishops yesterday denounced corruption in the Arroyo government but warned against removing President Arroyo from power.

The bishops, in a pastoral letter signed by Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, along with other Metro Manila bishops, called on the people to reject violence in a statement issued ahead of a youth-led anti-Arroyo protest rally in Manila.

The group of bishops said irregularities in government contracts, among other things, violate God’s Seventh Commandment.

As repentance, the irregularities in the government contracts must be returned from the original owner and, if not found, for the money to be given to the poor.

The letter entitled “Toward a morally rebuilt nation” was issued as the country continues to face a flurry of social and political issues.
