CA junks general’s promotion over fake poll

Sometimes, obedience does not pay.

This must have been what Army Col. Nestor Sadiarin realized by now as his promotion, just a step away from being a star-ranked military officer or as a brigadier general, was unanimously thumbed down by members of the Commission on Appointments (CA) at the screening level.

Sadiarin, also the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Civil Relations Service chief, was reported to have allegedly carried out a survey among soldiers and other military personnel regarding their sentiments on the then political plans of detained Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV.

GMA, JdV courting revolt with impeach kill

Reformists officers in the police and military yesterday sent a strong signal to the House of Representatives to its leadership, Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., for him to allow the impeachment proceedings against President Arroyo to succeed and be elevated to the Senate for trial to finally put to rest lingering issues that have been hounding her presidency since 2005 or risk military adventurism backed up by the people.

During an interview, Young Enlisted Soldiers Active and Retired Military Police for Solidarity (Yes Arms) spokesman retired Commodore Ismael Aparri said the situation is volatile and warned the Arroyo government that the men in uniform are closely observing the proceedings in the House, hoping that the latest impeachment complaint against the President — to be backed up by an amended complaint from the United Opposition (UNO) — will put a closure to lingering allegations of electoral fraud committed in the 2004 presidential elections, graft and corruption and human rights abuses.

Palace assures JdV amid impeach threat

Malacañang yesterday moved to douse ouster talks on Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. by publicly assuring the House leader that he will retain his position when Congress resumes sessions on Monday, Nov. 5.

This assurance comes amid strong talk that De Venecia has been soliciting signatures from Lakas members for the impeach-ment complaint against President Arroyo which was filed by lawyer Ruel Pulido and endorsed by Laguna Rep. Edgar San Luis.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita yesterday said De Venecia can now sleep soundly because it is unlikely that allies of the President in the House would launch a “coup” against him.

CBCP may take up ‘GMA resign’ call, says bishop

The influential leaders of the Catholic Church may meet to discuss the call led by some of its own members for President Arroyo to resign over several controversies that her administration has already been involved in, the latest of which is the alleged Malacañang bribery of its allied congressmen and local government officials for them to support a “sham” impeachment case filed against the Chief Executive.

Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines public affairs chairman Caloocan City Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez Jr. yesterday said the CBCP could either call a special meeting to take up the issue, or discuss it during its upcoming general assembly.

“The CBCP notes serious reactions to the matter from various sectors. It will either call a special meeting to study the issue and act accordingly, or it will take up the matter in its next general assembly,” Iñiguez told a radio interview.
